(1923) Token Benice 30A Copper Anchorage-No Gold Nugget AK Trade
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This copper trade token from circa 1923 is the "No Gold Nugget" variant of Benice 30A, issued in Anchorage, Alaska Territory. The absence of the gold nugget design element on this version distinguishes it from the companion variety and may indicate a different die state or a deliberate design variation. The Benice catalog documents both variants under the same base number, with the presence or absence of the nugget serving as the key distinguishing feature. Alaska trade tokens from the 1920s document a critical period in the territory's development, as the completion of the Alaska Railroad in 1923 connected Anchorage to Seward on the coast and Fairbanks in the interior, transforming the economic geography of central Alaska. Trade tokens facilitated commerce in a region where banking infrastructure was still developing and the federal monetary system could not always supply sufficient coinage for local needs. The copper composition and standard token size ensured these pieces could circulate alongside federal small change. Benice 30A without the gold nugget may represent either a simplified version intended for general circulation or a later striking after the nugget element was removed from the die.
Rarity Notes
Benice 30A without gold nugget is scarce. The no-nugget variant is generally considered comparable in rarity to the nugget version.
