Description
Judd-A1922-7 is the second appendix-numbered proof half dollar pattern from the 1922 Grant Memorial commemorative program. The existence of multiple pattern numbers for the Grant half dollar indicates that several design approaches were evaluated before the final configuration was approved. The Grant Memorial program was one of the larger classic commemorative efforts of the early 1920s, ultimately producing four distinct collectible varieties across two denominations (dollar and half dollar, each with and without star). This pattern may represent an alternative arrangement of the portrait, denomination, inscriptions, or reverse design elements from the adopted version. The 1922 commemorative program was managed under the direction of the Grant Centenary Memorial Association, and Laura Gardin Fraser worked closely with both the Association and the Commission of Fine Arts to develop designs that appropriately honored Grant's legacy.
