Reverse D2a– Small die break at top of second S in STATES. DPIS – In 1921 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # VAM-1W has extensive die cracks running along the tops of the letters in the motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM. While it is not unusual for a die crack to appear between the B and U in this motto, this variety was assigned a VAM number because the crack grew into a die break. A long thin break developed and the displaced metal can be seen quite clearly. # Filled Die: There is one specimen known of the VAM 1W with a spectacular filled obverse die. Most of the obverse lettering and stars are filled, but miraculously the key diagnostic BU break has been spared. As the die fill is so large, there are likely other specimens with lesser die fills.
