Description

=1921-D VAM-1Q "Pompadour T - Die Break T, Top"= Discovered by Jim Hart, June 2001 1Q (revised) IV 1 D2a (Die Break T Top) (189) Reverse D2a - Die crack thru tops of STATES OF extending left to wing tip and denticles with small die break at top of second T in STATES. Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle's right leg, between eagle's left wing and body and middle of both wings. ''Die marker -'' Single horizontal polishing line in top of wreath leaves opposite U in UNITED. DPIS – In 1921 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # Die break top of second 'T' of 'STATES' on the reverse. The "Pompadour" die break is popular w/ collectors, & comes in high grades. This die break runs across the top of the T in STATES. Looking like a windswept hairdo, this unusual break has extended the upper left potion of the T. This funky styling of the T is the reason it was nicknamed “Pompadour.” # This variety is known w/ 2 different filled dies. The D in DOLLAR is illustrated below. The first 't' in 'trust' is also seen filled, making it easy to confuse this w/ 1921-D VAM-1AI or 1921-D VAM-9A.
