Description

1921-D VAM-1J Die Break A, Cud at UNITED, Collar Clash Obverse Discovered by Michael S. Fey, October 1999 (Desirability: ) 3-19-14 Revised L.N. Revised 2016 '''1J'''(revised) '''IV 1 · D2a (Die Break A, Cud at UNITED, Collar Clash Obverse, Scribbling Die Scratches) (189) ''' '''Obverse IV 1 -''' Collar clash with light reeding indent at outside edge of rim from 11-1 o'clock appearing on EDS of breaks. '''Reverse D2a–''' Large die break at top of A in STATES extending left into denticles. Late die states show heavy die crack at top of ED in UNITED extending left and right to denticles with displaced field of retained cud. Fine die scratches in carious directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle's right leg. ''Die marker'' - Vertical die scratch on 5 to 9 outer feathers from bottom of eagle's right wing. '''DPIS – In 1921 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: '''Comments: # VAM-1J exhibits a large die break above the top of the A in STATES extending up and left into the denticles. # Considered the “King” of 1921-D non-cud die breaks, this is one of the largest die breaks in the 1921-D series. At the time “Fun With 1921” was published, there were only six known coins in the condition census. It appears that a small group of high quality coins was certified at NGC without the realization that they were this rare VAM. While the high end of the population has grown, this is a very tough VAM to find! # ONLY the Late Die State (LDS) commands a price premium. Earlier die states may also be labeled as VAM-1J. For a coin to be considered LDS or late die state, the top left of the break must be raised up as in the picture below. # 5/30/2013 - It has been reported that at least late MDS coins exhibit a collar clash above LURIB. This may result in a split of the listing to 1J1 & 1J2. # 3-19-14 - Collar clash on EDS example only elicited a revision via Leroy. # More Photos of this variety - Close-ups - 2014
