Description
The 1916 medal Baker-728A in gilt brass was issued by Thomas L. Elder, the prominent New York coin dealer and medal producer. Elder (1874-1948) was one of the most influential figures in early twentieth-century American numismatics, conducting hundreds of auction sales and commissioning numerous commemorative medals. The gilt brass composition provided an attractive golden appearance. Elder's medals are collected both for their intrinsic merit and for their association with this important figure in numismatic history. Baker-728A documents Elder's prolific output of Washington medals, which he produced and sold through his dealership on Manhattan's Nassau Street. The demand for Washington commemorative pieces was particularly intense during centennial celebrations, with the 1876 Centennial, 1882-1883 evacuation anniversaries, and 1887 Constitutional Centennial generating large numbers of medallic issues.
