Description

A dual-numbered pattern for the 1916 McKinley Memorial commemorative dollar, struck as part of the commemorative program honoring President William McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901. The McKinley Memorial half dollar and gold dollar were authorized in 1916 to raise funds for the construction of a memorial in Niles, Ohio, McKinley's birthplace. The gold dollar — designed by Charles Keck, who also created the 1915 Pan-Pacific gold dollar — features McKinley's portrait on the obverse and the memorial building on the reverse. J-1802 represents a pattern striking that may incorporate design elements or compositional variations not present in the adopted production version. The McKinley commemorative gold dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a total authorized mintage split between 1916 and 1917 dates, producing 9,977 pieces in 1916 and 10,000 in 1917. The commemorative program was one of several gold dollar issues of the era, following the Lewis and Clark (1904-1905) and Pan-Pacific (1915) gold dollars. J-1802's association with the alternative catalog number 2001 reflects the dual numbering that characterizes many early twentieth-century pattern entries.

Rarity Notes

R-7 (Extremely Rare). McKinley commemorative patterns are very scarce, with few specimens documented.
