Description

The second and final sub-variety of the J-1793b Pan-Pacific dollar pattern, sharing alternative catalog number 1967 with sub-variety 1. This piece differs from J-1793b-1 in composition, edge treatment, or die state while employing the same fundamental die pairing. The more limited sub-variety count for J-1793b compared to J-1793a (two versus nine) may indicate that this particular design concept was evaluated less extensively, because it was considered less promising or because it was developed later in the evaluation process when the decision against including a dollar in the commemorative series was already leaning toward finality. The Pan-Pacific commemorative program ultimately comprised five denominations: the half dollar designed by Charles Keck, the gold dollar also by Keck, the quarter eagle by Charles Keck and George T. Morgan, and the two $50 pieces — the round designed by Robert Aitken and the octagonal also by Aitken. The exclusion of a silver dollar from this ambitious lineup indicates that practical considerations, related to Congressional authorization or production capacity, took precedence over the artistic possibilities documented by these J-1793b patterns.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8 (Extremely Rare). The J-1793b sub-varieties are individually very scarce.
