Description

The fifth sub-variety of the J-1793a Pan-Pacific dollar pattern, returning to the alternative catalog number 1965 shared with sub-varieties 1 and 2. This grouping indicates that sub-variety 5 shares the same fundamental die pairing as the first two entries but is distinguished by a different composition or surface treatment. The extensive sub-variety sequence within J-1793a is notable even by the standards of early twentieth-century pattern coinage, where die combinations and metal variants were common. The Pan-Pacific dollar patterns occupy a unique position because they represent the most thoroughly documented rejected denomination in the commemorative series. While the authorized half dollar (designed by Charles Keck), gold dollar, quarter eagle, and two $50 pieces all entered production, the dollar patterns reveal an alternative vision for the program that would have provided a more affordable silver option for exposition visitors. The proof format on this striking indicates careful preparation intended for presentation or archival purposes rather than casual evaluation.

Rarity Notes

R-7 (Extremely Rare). Pan-Pacific dollar patterns are rare across all sub-varieties.
