Description
The 1912 (S) Liberty Head Nickel is a nickel produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the Liberty Head Nickels 1883-1912 series. With a mintage of 238,000, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by stars and the reverse displays a Roman numeral V (five) within a wreath of corn, cotton, and wheat. The 1912-D and 1912-S are the only Denver and San Francisco Mint issues in the entire series, both struck in the final year of regular production. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $163 to $2.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #3875.
