About This Coin
The 1912 Liberty Head Nickel is a United States nickel from the Liberty Head Nickels 1883-1912 series — a late issue, 30th of 31 years in the series. In 1912, coins were struck at the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints with a combined mintage of 34.9 million. This ranks 28th of 31 years by total mintage, above the series median of 16.8 million. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by stars and the reverse displays a Roman numeral V (five) within a wreath of corn, cotton, and wheat. The 1912-D and 1912-S are the only Denver and San Francisco Mint issues in the entire series, both struck in the final year of regular production. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Struck one year before the 1913 key date, the lowest-mintage regular issue in the series. Across its variants, estimated values range from $3 to $2.3K depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $41K in MS67 grade at Legend Rare Coin Auctions. Designed by Charles E. Barber.
