Description

This extraordinary variant of Judd-1778 features one of the most distinctive edge configurations in the entire 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle pattern series. The edge inscription reads E*PLURIBUS*UNUM with stars separating the words and additional stars trailing after the text, creating a bold decorative treatment that differs markedly from the more conventional edge lettering on other variants. The "Rev Up" designation indicates the orientation of the reverse relative to the edge lettering — when the obverse faces the viewer, flipping the coin over its vertical axis reveals the reverse in an upright position. This edge orientation was one of several variables tested alongside the lettering style itself. Saint-Gaudens had strong opinions about every aspect of his design including the edge treatment, and the star-separated motto reflects an ornamental approach consistent with his training in the Beaux-Arts tradition. The obverse carries Saint-Gaudens' striding Liberty while the reverse displays the eagle in flight. This pattern documents the remarkable level of detail with which the Mint explored edge configurations during the most important design overhaul in American coinage history.
