Description

Designated HK-341 in the Hibler-Kappen catalog, this 1906 piece commemorates T-1 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire. The 1907 Jamestown Tercentenary Exposition in Norfolk, Virginia commemorated the 300th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America, generating commemorative medals and the Jamestown gold dollar. The brass composition gives this piece a warm golden tone that distinguishes it from bronze and copper versions. Brass commemorative medals were produced in moderate quantities and tend to survive in better condition than white metal issues. Miscellaneous national commemorative medals were produced by a wide range of manufacturers, from the U.S. Mint to local die-sinkers, covering subjects from presidential inaugurations to infrastructure milestones. The Hibler-Kappen catalog has been updated and expanded since its 1963 first edition, with later researchers adding newly discovered varieties and extending coverage into the modern era.

Rarity Notes

Brass strikings of HK-341 are common to moderately scarce. Early 20th century medals were often distributed at events, with many entering circulation as pocket pieces rather than being preserved as collectibles.
