Description

Colorado Springs gave a full week, September 23 to 29, 1906, to the centennial of Zebulon Pike's sighting of the peak that carries his name, opening on a Sunday with church services across the city that praised Pike's character, faith and service to the country. The weekdays brought parades, polo matches, band concerts, a golf tournament and a rodeo, a speech by Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks, and the unveiling of a bronze tablet on the summit and of a granite marker in Antlers Park bearing four plaques on the discovery, Pike's life and passages from his diary. The Pike Monument Association staged the celebration and paid for it through gifts and the sale of medals. HK-335 is the official medal in proof silver, 34 mm, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, with Pike's bust on one side and the peak on the other.
