RCD-1c-1905-03R Retained Cud
Error
Description
Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the RCD-1c-1905-03R is the third documented reverse retained cud for the 1905 Indian Head Cent — a date from the high-mintage final decade of the series when annual production regularly exceeded 80 million pieces. Retained cuds result from rim die fractures where the broken section stays in position during striking, and the frequency of documented retained cuds tends to correlate with production volume, as more dies in service means more opportunities for failure. The 1905 Indian Head Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of approximately 80.7 million pieces, among the highest in the series, and the "03R" designation places this as the third reverse retained cud identified from this prolific production year. By 1905, the Indian Head design had been in production for 46 years, and James B. Longacre's wreath reverse would serve only four more years before Victor David Brenner's Lincoln Cent replaced the series in 1909. Reverse retained cuds from the high-mintage final years of the Indian Head series are among the more available die break varieties for collectors of this denomination.
