Description
The Baker-1826A medal in silver is the precious-metal variant of the Baker-1826 Monument Association design. As with Baker-1825a, the silver version was produced in limited quantities for presentation purposes, distinguishing it from the more widely distributed bronze striking. The "A" suffix in Baker's system consistently designates an alternate composition of the base design. Silver Washington Monument Association medals represent a premium tier of commemorative production. They were typically hand-selected from the production run for quality and presented in cases or holders appropriate to their status as gifts for distinguished recipients. The silver composition also ensured these pieces would maintain their visual appeal over time without the patination or verdigris that can affect bronze medals in less-than-ideal storage conditions. The Washington Monument Association movement reached its zenith in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with communities across the country erecting monuments ranging from simple obelisks to elaborate equestrian statues. Each monument project generated its own constellation of commemorative medals, creating a rich subcategory within the Washingtoniana collecting field.
Rarity Notes
