Description
The 1902 medal Baker-174LF in bronze bears the "Peace and Friendship" inscription, an echo of the message found on the original Indian Peace medals of Washington's presidency. The "Peace and Friendship" formula was the standard greeting on diplomatic medals exchanged with Native American leaders, and its use on early twentieth-century commemoratives connects the contemporary piece to the founding-era diplomatic tradition. Baker-174LF is a supplemental variant within the extensive Baker-174 series. Bronze composition indicates standard commemorative production. The Peace and Friendship theme maintained its relevance well beyond the original diplomatic context, becoming a general expression of the goodwill and international friendship that Washington's admirers attributed to his character.
