Description

The 1901 Lesher Dollar HK-796a is the Boyd Park variant without a serial number. This scarce version carries the "BOYD PARK / DENVER, COLO." merchant stamp but lacks the individually punched serial number found on standard HK-796 pieces. The absence of the serial number removes the tracking capability that was integral to Lesher's distribution system, where numbered sequences allowed him to monitor which merchants received which pieces. Rated R-7, the unnumbered Boyd Park variety is significantly scarcer than the numbered version (R-5), following the pattern seen across all Lesher Dollar merchant types where "a" variants survive in much smaller numbers. The relatively larger production run for Boyd Park compared to most other merchants means that even the unnumbered variant has more potential survivors than the "a" variants of lower-mintage merchants. The existence of both numbered and unnumbered Boyd Park pieces, combined with the documented serial number range of #502-#648 on numbered examples, provides researchers with useful data points for understanding the Lesher Dollar production and distribution process. Whether the unnumbered pieces were struck before, during, or after the numbered run remains a matter of scholarly discussion in the specialized study of Colorado territorial numismatics.

Rarity Notes

R-7. Very scarce variant without serial number. Significantly rarer than the numbered HK-796 version.
