Description

The 1901 Lesher Dollar HK-795a is the George Mullen variant without a serial number. Where the standard HK-795 bears an individually punched serial number alongside the "GEO. MULLEN / VICTOR, COLO." merchant stamp, this variety carries only the merchant identification without the tracking number. The "a" suffix in the Hibler-Kappen catalog system specifically designates this no-number variant. This is one of the rarest Lesher Dollar varieties, rated R-9, meaning fewer than five examples exist. The extreme scarcity of unnumbered merchant pieces compared to their numbered counterparts indicates that serial numbering was standard practice and that unnumbered pieces were exceptional — test strikes, pieces set aside before numbering, or specimens where the number was intentionally omitted for a specific purpose. Only a handful of merchant types have documented "a" variants (Bumstead, Mullen, Boyd Park, and White), and in each case the unnumbered version is significantly scarcer than the numbered issue. For collectors pursuing a complete Lesher Dollar variety set, the "a" variants represent some of the most challenging acquisitions in the series, with opportunities to acquire them appearing only rarely in the market.
