Description
The 1899 (S) Barber Half Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a half dollar in the Barber Half Dollars 1892-1915 series. With a mintage of 1.7 million, this is a less common issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 19% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $57 to $2.7K depending on grade and condition.
