Description
The Reginald Huth Copper Medal cataloged as Medcalf-Russell 2MH-5B is the copper striking of the 2MH-5 design, produced in an astonishingly small mintage of just two pieces. This near-unique medal represents one of the ultimate rarities in all of Hawaiian numismatics — a medallic issue of which only a single pair was ever struck, as a compositional variant or special presentation piece accompanying the silver version. The practice of striking medals in multiple metals — silver, copper, bronze, iron, and occasionally gold — was standard in nineteenth-century medallic art. The copper version typically served as a trial or specimen piece. With only two copper specimens produced, the 2MH-5B was clearly not intended for any form of distribution and represents the most exclusive tier of the Huth medal program. The copper composition gives this medal a distinctly different visual character from its silver counterpart. The warm, reddish tones of freshly struck copper mature over time into rich brown or reddish-brown patinas, providing an aesthetic that many collectors find particularly appealing for medallic art. The auction record of $66,000 in PR65BN condition at Heritage Auctions in 2018 reflects the extraordinary rarity and desirability of this piece. As one of only two examples known, each appearance at auction is effectively a once-in-a-generation opportunity for collectors.
