Description

The Kahului Railroad Company 35-cent token is the most unusual denomination in the entire Hawaiian plantation series, with no American coinage equivalent at any point in history. This odd-value token was deliberately chosen to match specific price points at the Kahului company store, corresponding to higher-value provisions such as imported meat, larger quantities of rice, or manufactured goods. The 35-cent denomination illustrates the degree to which plantation store economies operated independently of mainstream monetary conventions, free to establish whatever denominations best served their internal commerce. At the standard 27mm brass specification shared across the Kahului series, this token was functionally interchangeable in size and feel with the other denominations, distinguished only by its stamped value. The Kahului Railroad Company's comprehensive denomination system, ranging from 10 cents through 75 cents in irregular increments, indicates careful economic planning by the company's management to minimize the need for making change in store transactions. Each denomination have corresponded to a specific tier of goods, creating a streamlined purchasing system. The 35-cent token occupies the critical middle range, bridging everyday staples and premium goods.

Rarity Notes

Rare. The 35-cent denomination is among the scarcer values in the Kahului series. Certified examples command strong premiums.
