Description
The Kahului Railroad Company 20-cent token echoes a denomination that briefly appeared in United States coinage from 1875 to 1878 but found lasting utility in the Hawaiian plantation economy. The twenty-cent value was well-suited to the pricing of staple goods at the Kahului company store, roughly equivalent to several pounds of poi or a generous portion of dried fish, the dietary staples of the plantation workforce. While the U.S. twenty-cent piece was abandoned due to confusion with the quarter dollar, the Kahului token system avoided this problem because each denomination was used exclusively within the closed plantation economy where workers were thoroughly familiar with the series. The 27mm brass token was produced alongside the complete range of Kahului denominations in 1891, the same year that Queen Liliuokalani ascended to the Hawaiian throne following King Kalakaua's death in San Francisco. Maui's plantation communities, largely insulated from Honolulu's political intrigues, continued their daily routines of field labor, store purchases, and community life. The twenty-cent denomination occupied a comfortable middle position in the Kahului series, bridging the gap between the smaller 10-cent and 15-cent tokens and the larger 25-cent quarter value.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. The 20-cent denomination is moderately available within the Kahului series but remains challenging to find with strong detail and minimal corrosion.
