Description

This bronzed medal Julian MT-17 honors Oliver Christian Bosbyshell (1839-1921), who served as Superintendent of the Philadelphia Mint from 1889 to 1894. A Civil War veteran who had been severely wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, Bosbyshell brought military discipline and administrative efficiency to the Mint's operations during a period of high production volume driven by the mandatory silver dollar coinage required by the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890. His tenure saw the Philadelphia Mint produce millions of Morgan silver dollars annually while simultaneously maintaining its medal, proof set, and commemorative programs. The obverse features a portrait of Bosbyshell, whose Civil War service and subsequent career in Republican politics led to his appointment at the Mint. As superintendent rather than director, Bosbyshell was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Philadelphia facility — managing the workforce, overseeing production schedules, and ensuring the quality of the Mint's output. His military background served him well in managing the large workforce required to meet the enormous coinage demands of the early 1890s, when the silver purchase mandates kept the presses running at near-maximum capacity. The reverse carries the Julian MT-17 designation and commemorative inscriptions appropriate to Bosbyshell's service. The distinction between "Superintendent" and "Director" is important — the superintendent managed the Philadelphia facility specifically, while the director oversaw the entire Mint system. Bosbyshell's medal recognizes the critical operational role that superintendents played in keeping the nation's primary coinage facility running smoothly during periods of peak demand.
