Coin Details
Description
Gilt-brass commemorative medal struck for the centennial of George Washington's first inauguration, April 30, 1789 to April 30, 1889. The centennial was celebrated with major civic events in New York City including a three-day celebration featuring a naval review in New York Harbor, a grand military parade, and a reenactment of Washington's journey from Elizabethtown Point, New Jersey, to the Federal Hall steps where he had taken the oath of office one hundred years prior. President Grover Cleveland attended the festivities, which drew enormous crowds to the city. Catalogued by Musante as GW-1109, this medal is representative of the commemorative medal tradition that flourished around the Washington Inaugural Centennial. The gilt finish over brass gives the piece a rich golden appearance suitable for a celebratory keepsake.
Rarity Notes
Scarce commemorative of the Washington Inaugural Centennial of 1889. Musante records this type, but original populations are limited. Survivors in intact original gilt condition are uncommon, as the surface treatment is subject to wear and oxidation over time.
