Description
An aluminum striking of the 1884 ring nickel design, J-1725 pairs the lightweight metal with the perforated five-cent format. Like its cent counterpart J-1722, the aluminum composition produces a strikingly light coin that would have been dramatically different in hand feel from the standard nickel five-cent pieces of the period. The aluminum ring nickel represents the most radical departure from conventional American coinage explored in the 1884 pattern series — a coin that is both perforated and composed of a metal that most Americans of the era would never have encountered. The aluminum five-cent patterns attracted attention from collectors almost immediately upon their availability, as the novel combination of material and form made them visually distinctive cabinet pieces. Most surviving examples display cameo-like proof surfaces, with frosted design elements contrasting against mirrored fields, indicating careful striking on polished dies. The finest known specimens have been graded as high as PR66+ Cameo by major grading services, testament to the quality of their original manufacture.
Rarity Notes
R-7 (Extremely Rare). Approximately 8-12 examples known. Most are Cameo Proofs, though many were certified before grading services recognized the Cameo designation.
