Description
The third variety in the 1884 ring cent series, J-1723 is struck in copper-nickel, the same alloy that had been used for the Indian Head cent from 1859 to 1864 before the wartime transition to bronze. The copper-nickel composition gives this pattern a distinctive pale golden tone that differs from both the silvery nickel of J-1721 and the bright aluminum of J-1722. By striking the ring cent design across three different metals, Chief Engraver Barber and Mint officials could evaluate how the annular format performed in each composition and assess which combination of material and form best served the goal of preventing confusion between small and large denomination coins. The ring cent concept reflected genuine practical concerns of the 1880s. The bronze Indian Head cent was small enough to be confused with other coins in a pocket or purse, and its value relative to production cost was under constant scrutiny. Johnson's perforated design addressed both issues simultaneously — the larger apparent size improved identification, while the removed center reduced metal consumption per coin.
