Description
This silver medal cataloged as GW-1008A is the premium silver version of the George Washington Evacuation Day centennial medal, produced circa 1883. Silver strikings of Evacuation Day medals were produced in very limited quantities for presentation to dignitaries, VIPs attending the centennial ceremonies, or the most discriminating collectors. The silver composition elevates this from a celebration souvenir to a serious numismatic collectible, commanding substantially higher prices both at the time of issue and in the modern market. The 1883 Evacuation Day centennial attracted national attention, as it celebrated one of the defining moments of the Revolution's conclusion — the moment when New York, America's largest city, was finally freed from seven years of British military occupation. The silver GW-1008A represents the finest version of this commemorative available to collectors.
