Description
This proof pattern pairs the Roman numeral V reverse with a Liberty Head obverse that features distinguishing characteristics from the J-1711 die pairing. J-1712 was struck in nickel with a plain edge and represents a different combination of obverse and reverse elements within the "No CENTS" design family. The pattern documents the Mint's practice of creating multiple die pairings to evaluate how slight variations in the obverse portrait — differences in hair detail, star placement, or letter positioning — interacted with the standardized V reverse. Chief Engraver Charles Barber was known for his meticulous approach to die preparation, and the multiple die combinations preserved in the Judd catalog reveal the iterative refinement process that produced the final production design. Stack's Bowers has offered PR65 Cameo specimens graded by PCGS with CAC Gold Label approval, confirming that exceptional proof surfaces survive on this variety. The pattern's close relationship to the adopted production design makes it a natural companion piece for collectors assembling a comprehensive representation of the 1883 Liberty Head nickel development program.
