(1882) Silver Token Phillipse Manor, Yonkers, NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This silver token from circa 1882 commemorates Philipsburg Manor in Yonkers, New York, one of the most significant colonial-era estates in the Hudson Valley. The Philipse family, beginning with Dutch immigrant Frederick Philipse in the 1650s, accumulated a vast manorial estate stretching from the Bronx to Croton-on-Hudson that made them one of the wealthiest families in colonial New York. The manor was confiscated during the American Revolution when Frederick Philipse III remained loyal to the British Crown, and the property was divided and sold. This silver token represents a commemorative piece, produced for a historical celebration or preservation effort related to the Philipse Manor site. By the 1880s, interest in preserving colonial-era historic sites was growing in the Hudson Valley, and commemorative tokens were frequently produced for anniversary celebrations and fundraising events. The silver composition indicates a premium piece, produced in limited quantities for subscribers or event participants willing to pay more than the cost of base-metal versions. Philipsburg Manor would eventually become a historic site operated by Historic Hudson Valley, but in the 1880s the buildings and grounds were still in private hands and preservation was an aspiration rather than an accomplished fact.
Rarity Notes
This silver Phillipse Manor token is rare. Silver commemorative tokens from the 1880s survive in small numbers and are sought by collectors of Hudson Valley and colonial New York history.
