Description
A copper striking of the 1882 Morgan Dollar from dies associated with the regular production coinage, cataloged as a distinct Judd number due to differences in die state, planchet characteristics, or striking details from J-1703. The letter suffix indicates this is a recognized variant within the broader Morgan dollar die trial series of 1882. The obverse and reverse designs are identical to the standard 1882 Morgan Silver Dollar — George T. Morgan's Liberty Head and heraldic eagle — but the copper planchet transforms the coin's visual character entirely. The warm copper tones and exceptional strike detail make these off-metal Morgan strikings highly prized among pattern collectors. The existence of multiple recognized copper Morgan dollar die trials from 1882 indicates that Mint officials produced small quantities for different purposes: die testing, official collections, and presentation pieces. This specimen may represent the sole known example of its particular die combination or state.
