Description
This gilt brass medal cataloged as GW-352R is a restrike of the "Washington of Virginia" medal, produced circa 1882. The "R" suffix in the catalog designation identifies this as a restrike — a later striking from original or copied dies, rather than an original period production. The gilt finish applied to the brass core creates a gold-like appearance that elevates this restrike above common brass medals. "Washington of Virginia" emphasizes the first president's identity as a Virginia planter and gentleman, connecting him to the landed aristocratic tradition that produced many of the founding generation's leaders. Restrikes of Washington medals were commonly produced during the centennial era and afterward to satisfy collector demand for pieces whose original dies had long since been retired. The gilt surface is fragile and rarely survives intact, making well-preserved gilt examples particularly desirable among Washington medal collectors.
