Description
Third nickel five-cent pattern from 1881, representing another step in the Liberty Head Nickel design evolution. The obverse carries the Liberty Head portrait with coronet, while the reverse continues the wreath-and-V denomination format. This variety incorporates specific design modifications that distinguish it from J-1671 and J-1672, whether in the treatment of the portrait, the wreath elements, the letter spacing, or other die details. The progression from J-1671 through J-1674a documents Barber's methodical approach to coin design, in which small adjustments to individual elements were tested in proof format before advancing to the next iteration. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, consistent with all the 1881 five-cent patterns and anticipating the final composition adopted for the Liberty Nickel. These early prototypes circulated among Mint officials and select numismatists, generating feedback that informed subsequent design revisions in 1882.
