Description

=1878-S VAM-46A Engraved Wing Feather, Die Break Wreath= Discovered by Calvin Cherry, July 2002. Revised May 2024 to split with VAM 46B 46A II 60 · B2i (Engraved Wing Feather, Die Break Wreath) (184) Obverse II 60 – Thin worm-like die scratch behind eye and two tiny die chips in hair bun. Reverse B2i – Die break forms from the outer berry in the left wreath opposite the N in UNITED upward and into the leaves, connecting with the left edge of the middle leaf. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: 46, 46A, 46B, 52 :Reverse: Comments: # Vampicker, Jun 4, 2012: I'd say the distinction is a clear break and not just a crack. As has been pointed out, there's a fairly impressive progression on this marriage. I'd say that second large set of images on the VAM 46A page is about the least amount of breaking in the wreath that I'd still call a VAM-46A. # The second large set of pictures is what John Roberts calls the start of the 46A. You can see a break in the leaves. # LRosenbaum Break Progression # As of May 2024, the full "extra berry" die break is listed as VAM 46B
