Description

=1878-S VAM-37 Doubled UNUM, Engraved Wing Feather, S/S Left= Discovered by David DeRuiter, November 1979. 37(revised) II 41 · B2y (Doubled UNUM, Engraved Wing Feather, S/S Left) (184) Obverse II 41– Slightly doubled US UNUM towards rim, Phrygian cap top, right wheat leaf, front edge of hair and front of LIBERTY band. Fourth right star broken. Reverse B2y– Same reverse die as VAM-23. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The scratch in the denticles above "S O" is only present on VAM 37A. Later die stages do not have this due to polishing, and would be called VAM 37. The beveled field effect is also weaker on later die stages. # Feather engraved between eagle’s right wing and leg. III S mint mark re-punched with short diagonal line at top middle inside of upper loop and curved line within lower loop. R in Trust partially broken. Eagle’s left wing slightly over polished in center. # Die marker - Small curved gouge line at lower left side of lower cotton leaf. # The die polish lines near the face do not always present themselves. The same should be said for the doubling on the U. The aforementioned die marker is an outstanding feature that has been present on all the specimens I have looked at to date.
