Description
=1878-S VAM-121A Engraved Wing Feather, Rusted Die Wings= Discovered by Michael Ash, March 2006. Renumbered from VAM 8A, October 2023. This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety. 121A II 57 · B2k (Engraved Wing Feather, Rusted Die Wings) (184) Reverse B2k– Raised dots from rusted die on eagle’s wings with some splotches on eagle’s left wing. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # There is a pronounce engraved patch in the upper center of the right wing. The wings have overpolished spots and noticeable die scratches. The entire reverse has dense die polish hairlines all over the fields. # Same obverse die as VAM 47. # A die state of this marriage has extensive polishing lines on the reverse and can be found with marginally proof like surfaces. This stage with the voids in the left wing appears to be the intermediate stage and would currently be listed as VAM 121. The 'rusted die' of VAM 121A is likely acid treatment to fill the void.
