Considered quite rare by 1878-S expert. 1878-S Morgans have some astounding varieties on the eagles wing feathers, but the VAM-50 may top them all. The tripled eyelid obverse is shared w/ [[1878-S VAM-76, but is not as interesting as VAM-50. The reverse has a series of surface dots which, w/ a little imagination, looks like a flow of lava. Larry Briggs has searched tens of thousands of 1878-s coins & found only two VAM-50's & one [[1878-S VAM-76 (which was a discovery piece at the time). As w/ many 1878-S VAMs, engraved wing feathers are a key to identification of the VAM.
