(1877) Copper Token Rulau NY-NY 395, Isaac F. Wood-Grant
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Copper token by Isaac F. Wood featuring President Ulysses S. Grant, 1877. This is a copper striking from Wood's prolific token series, specifically bearing a portrait of Grant, who had completed his second presidential term in March 1877. Wood frequently produced tokens honoring sitting and former presidents. The copper composition distinguishes this from the standard brass strikings. Wood's Grant portrait tokens were produced during Grant's famous round-the-world tour (1877-1879), which kept the former president in the public eye. Copper, 19mm. The late 1860s and 1870s saw merchant tokens issued in an economy transitioning from wartime disruption to peacetime growth, with centennial consciousness increasingly shaping commemorative designs. New York City's position as the hub of American die-sinking meant that merchants from multiple states commissioned their tokens from Manhattan workshops staffed by master engravers.
