Description

Copper theater token for the Park Theatre, New York City's first major playhouse, founded 1798 on Park Row opposite City Hall Park. Designed by architect Joseph-Francois Mangin (who also designed New York's City Hall), the Park Theatre seated 2,000 and was considered the finest theater in America for three decades. It hosted the American debuts of major English actors including Edmund Kean, Junius Brutus Booth, and Fanny Kemble. The original building burned in 1820, was immediately rebuilt, and continued operating until a second fire destroyed it permanently in 1848. Theater tokens served as admission checks or reserved-seat indicators. Copper, 28mm. Tokens from the early republic era predate the organized Hard Times token movement and represent the first generation of American merchant advertising pieces. Authentication relies on die characteristics, metal composition analysis, and comparison with known genuine specimens.

Rarity Notes

Rare. Theater token from the most important playhouse in early American theatrical history. The Park Theatre's two fires (1820, 1848) limit surviving material culture. These tokens are collected by both exonumia specialists and theatrical history enthusiasts. The Park Theatre's central role in establishing American theater culture gives this token significance beyond its numismatic value.
