Description
This copper die trial of the 1876-CC dime has been graded as a proof. uspatterns counts it among the few known trials of branch mint dies and thinks it and its companions were probably struck at Philadelphia as fantasies for a collector. The proof designation indicates the dies were polished to produce a mirror-like field, and the planchet was specially prepared to achieve the sharp, frosted relief against brilliant surfaces that characterizes proof coinage. In Judd, 1453a is the copper striking and 1453b the nickel one. The 1876 date coincides with the United States Centennial, a year of heightened numismatic interest when the Mint produced numerous special pieces for collectors and dignitaries.
