Description

This bronzed white metal medal cataloged as GW-891 commemorates the Battle of Trenton, produced circa 1876 as part of the centennial Revolutionary War battle series. The Battle of Trenton (December 26, 1776) — Washington's famous crossing of the ice-choked Delaware River on Christmas night to surprise the Hessian garrison — is one of the most celebrated events in American history. The victory captured approximately 900 Hessian soldiers and, more importantly, rescued the Revolution from collapse at its lowest point. Washington's audacious attack demonstrated that the Continental Army could take the offensive and win, reviving enlistments and public morale that had been devastated by months of defeats. As the climactic battle of the 1776 campaign, Trenton was the natural conclusion of the centennial battle series. The bronzed white metal format provides the series' consistent aesthetic.
