Description
This bronzed white metal medal cataloged as GW-890 commemorates the Battle of Fort Washington, produced circa 1876 as part of the centennial Revolutionary War battle series. The fall of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776, was one of the worst American defeats of the war — the British captured the fort on the northern tip of Manhattan along with approximately 2,800 American soldiers. Washington watched the attack from across the Hudson River at Fort Lee, reportedly weeping at the sight. The loss of Fort Washington and the subsequent abandonment of Fort Lee marked the nadir of American fortunes in 1776, before Washington's Christmas night crossing of the Delaware and victory at Trenton reversed the war's momentum. This medal documents one of the Revolution's darkest moments, reminding centennial-era Americans that independence was won through devastating defeats as well as celebrated victories.
