Coin Details
Description
This bronzed white metal medal cataloged as GW-888 commemorates the Battle of Lake Champlain (more precisely, the naval engagement at Valcour Island), produced circa 1876 as part of the centennial Revolutionary War battle series. The Battle of Valcour Island (October 11, 1776) saw a small American fleet commanded by Benedict Arnold β before his treason β engage a much larger British naval force on Lake Champlain. Although the American fleet was destroyed, the battle delayed the British invasion from Canada by a full year, allowing the Americans to build the defenses that ultimately stopped the British advance at Saratoga in 1777. The Lake Champlain engagement is considered one of the most strategically important battles of the Revolution despite being a tactical defeat. The bronzed white metal composition continues the uniform format of the centennial battle series, documenting this crucial northern theater engagement alongside the better-known battles around New York City.
