Coin Details
Description
This bronzed white metal medal cataloged as GW-887 commemorates the Battle of Harlem Plains (also called Harlem Heights), produced circa 1876 as part of the centennial Revolutionary War battle series. The Battle of Harlem Heights (September 16, 1776) was a small but psychologically important American victory on upper Manhattan, fought the day after the humiliating rout at Kip's Bay. Continental troops, including a company of Connecticut Rangers, successfully counterattacked a British advance party and drove them back — the first time American forces had stood and fought successfully since the Battle of Bunker Hill over a year earlier. The morale boost was enormous, convincing Washington's demoralized troops that they could match British regulars in open combat. The bronzed white metal composition and format match the rest of the centennial battle series, providing continuity for set collectors documenting the Revolutionary War's major engagements.
