Description
This bronzed white metal medal cataloged as GW-886 commemorates the Battle of Long Island, produced circa 1876 as part of the centennial Revolutionary War battle series. The Battle of Long Island (August 27, 1776), also known as the Battle of Brooklyn, was the largest engagement of the entire war and the first major battle following the Declaration of Independence. British General William Howe's forces outflanked and defeated Washington's army on the western end of Long Island, but Washington's brilliant nighttime evacuation across the East River to Manhattan on August 29-30 saved the Continental Army from destruction. This strategic retreat β executed under cover of fog and darkness β is often cited as one of Washington's finest hours as a military commander. The medal documents this pivotal early battle within the centennial series, reminding centennial-era Americans that the road to independence began with a devastating defeat that tested Washington's leadership.
