Coin Details
Description
This bronzed white metal medal cataloged as GW-885 commemorates the defense of Sullivan's Island, produced circa 1876 as part of the centennial Revolutionary War battle series. The Battle of Sullivan's Island (June 28, 1776) saw Colonel William Moultrie's garrison successfully defend their palmetto-log fort against a British naval assault at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The spongy palmetto logs absorbed British cannonballs rather than shattering, and the fort's cannon fire damaged several Royal Navy warships. This dramatic American victory — occurring just days before the Declaration of Independence — secured the Southern colonies from British invasion for several years and made Moultrie a national hero. The palmetto became the symbol of South Carolina, appearing on the state flag to this day. The bronzed white metal composition matches the rest of the centennial battle series, providing a uniform appearance for set collectors.
