Description
The 1876 medal GW-898 in bronze features the second obverse die with a "Fort Washington, No. 7" reverse, referencing a Masonic or fraternal lodge named after Fort Washington. Fort Washington was a Continental Army fortification in northern Manhattan that fell to the British on November 16, 1776 — one of Washington's most painful defeats during the Revolution. The naming of a fraternal lodge after Fort Washington transformed a military defeat into a memorial of sacrifice, honoring the approximately 2,800 American soldiers who were captured when the fort fell. Lodge members who commissioned this Centennial medal intended it to honor both the sacrifice of the fort's defenders and the broader cause of American independence. Bronze composition indicates standard lodge commemorative production. The "No. 7" designation identifies a specific chapter or camp within the fraternal organization.
