Description
The 1876 medal GW-861 in bronze bears the inscription "First in War" alongside "Magna Est Veritas" (Great Is The Truth), combining Henry Lee's famous eulogy of Washington with the Latin motto. The "First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of His Countrymen" phrase was the most quoted tribute to Washington throughout the nineteenth century. The pairing of the "First in War" phrase with the Latin truth motto creates a medal that operates on two registers — the popular English tribute accessible to all and the classical Latin reinforcing Washington's connection to ancient republican virtue. Bronze composition indicates standard commemorative production. GW-861 represents the characteristic Centennial-era practice of combining multiple patriotic and classical elements on a single medal to create a rich commemorative statement.
Rarity Notes
