Description

This brass Centennial token (Pa-Ph 702B) was issued by A. Picard, a general merchant of Philadelphia. A Philadelphia merchant with French surname, adding diversity to the predominantly Germanic names among Centennial token issuers, with four varieties across Pa-Ph 701-702. Brass tokens notably scarcer than white metal. French surname adds diversity to predominantly Germanic names. Brass tokens featured a distinctive gold-like appearance that elevated them above copper and white metal pieces in the Centennial souvenir hierarchy. Centennial merchant tokens overwhelmingly bear the workmanship of the Lingg firm, whose die-sinking expertise made them the default manufacturer for Philadelphia businesses. The Exposition's 285 acres in Fairmount Park contained five main buildings and scores of smaller pavilions where 37 nations displayed their cultural and industrial achievements.
