Description
This brass Centennial token (Pa-Ph 702B) was issued by A. Picard, a general merchant of Philadelphia. A Philadelphia merchant with French surname, adding diversity to the predominantly Germanic names among Centennial token issuers, with four varieties across Pa-Ph 701-702. Brass tokens notably scarcer than white metal. French surname adds diversity to predominantly Germanic names. Brass tokens featured a distinctive gold-like appearance that elevated them above copper and white metal pieces in the Centennial souvenir hierarchy. Centennial merchant tokens overwhelmingly bear the workmanship of the Lingg firm, whose die-sinking expertise made them the default manufacturer for Philadelphia businesses.
