Coin Details
Description
This brass Centennial token (NY-NY 709B) was issued by Dean Cakes, a confectionery and bakery of New York City. Dean's Cakes was a popular NYC confectionery that issued six Centennial token varieties. Tokens carry New York catalog numbers (NY-NY 709-711). As a confectionery Dean likely distributed tokens as premiums with candy. Brass tokens featured a distinctive gold-like appearance that elevated them above copper and white metal pieces in the Centennial souvenir hierarchy. Lingg & Bro. supplied the majority of Centennial advertising tokens from their centrally located Philadelphia shop. Memorial Hall, the Exposition's permanent art gallery, was the only major building designed to survive the fair and remains standing in Fairmount Park as a lasting architectural legacy of the Centennial. The 285-acre Exposition in Fairmount Park showcased innovations from 37 nations, including Bell's telephone, the Corliss steam engine, and Remington's typewriter — technologies that would reshape American life.
